1836 O-106 Beaded Reverse NGC / CAC VF35 50C ~ Lovely Original & Under-rated Variety! (bx11.277)

Smooth, lustrous fields are free from hairlines and any notable abrasions. Rich, honey brown patina with sky blue, rose, and gold accents over shimmering fields. Just missed XF40, though the reverse is all there. Very sharp strike for this variety, and appears to be an earlier die state than typically encountered, as the beading is more intact than most others we've seen!

The Beaded Border Reverse is very unusual, yet remains a largely unknown sub-type and a unique variant in the Lettered Edge half dollar era. 1836 was a transitional year for the half dollar; toward the end of the year, the Mint switched over to steam power and began striking halves in a close collar. The Capped Bust design was reworked to accommodate the change in planchet size and thickness, and the traditional dentil rim was replaced, on the obverse, with a raised, beaded border. That same close collar technology ended the clunky, obsolete system of running the off-round open collar coins through an edge lettering machine, as each coin would now be imparted with a reeded edge at the time of striking. These design concepts had not been feasible with open collar minting practices, and today, the impact of this new technology is clear, the halves of late 1836 through 1839 are often referred to simply as Reeded Edge half dollars.

However, the present Overton 106 die marriage employed the new Beaded Border on its reverse, while keeping the old Capped Bust, open collar design with a lettered edge. A highly unusual, experimental design type; the O-106 marriage must have been made shortly before the changes were implemented. In fact, this was the only time a Beaded Border was used on an open collar half dollar, and for good reason. Metal simply will not flow evenly into a beaded border design without the aid of a close collar to force metal upward instead of outward; the beading stretched and became distorted as metal squeezed out the open collar, and the beaded reverse border is often found incomplete or distorted.

CAC, or Certified Acceptance Corporation, green-stickers only coins that are solid, if not high-end for the assigned PCGS/NGC grade. CAC will gold-sticker PCGS/NGC coins they believe to be under-graded outright. The extra verification provided by CAC confirms that you aren't buying low-end material; and our specialization in high-end coins means that you will continue to see CAC stickers appearing in the inventory of DM RARE COINS!
