The 2011 set will go down through the ages, not only as one of the most beautiful Eagle sets ever produced, but also as one of the most infamous!

The 25th Anniversary Set was destined to become a highly collectible item when the Mint made the decision to produce just 100,000. In less than 5 hours, they sold out. Silver Eagles are one of the most popular bullion coins in the world, and the high price of silver (hovering between $30 and $50 an ounce) has increased the demand for Eagles to incredible levels, and 100,000 sets was simply not enough to meet basic demand. For comparison: the 2006, 20th Anniversary, 3-coin Set had a mintage of 250,000, and it sold out in less than one day, back in a time when the price of silver was around $8 an ounce!

The Mint's unrealistic limit of 100,000 coins was not the only thing creating instant demand for these sets. The controversy created by the Mint's recklessly faulty distribution practices and inferior packaging methods, as well as the necessity of keeping the boxes perfectly sealed until received by the grading services, have both contributed to a certain stigma surrounding the 25th Anniversary Set. Because every household was allowed to order 5 sets, the actual number of people able to buy a set from the Mint was as low as 20,000. Additionally, because 3 of the 5 coins were produced throughout 2011, it was necessary for the grading services to require that the Mint-sealed boxes be unopened in order for the coins to be pedigreed as "25th Anniversary Set." This means that every set that was opened can be deducted from the 100,000 set mintage.

All of which makes acquiring a certified set a highly desirable endeavor!
